Sambar Deer and Six Before Five series
After the long but successful Hog deer hunt in April, I had a break for a while, but as the days turned into week I started the bug to get back in time to hunt the high country and the really cool stuff, south Pacific toughest game animals the Samba deer. Matt and I regularly went hunting Sambar and a trip was soon John arranged with a friend, matt, Elyas and me. May is a good time to hunt Sambar, too cold for snakes, but not too cold to have to rough up, or so I thought.
After packing again whatever it is and what might be in any situation we meet for a hunt in Victoria's alpine high country. We arrived there very late at night and found mat and John had hit the hay asked after the game that day. So I quickly dumped all the gear from the car set up the loot and hit the hay too. In the morning a rapid burning of the fire, a hot brew and then the longest part of all, decide where we all go hunting. After dressing myself in full camouflage and then ragging Elyas some warm clothes, we put on a brisk walk to the hunting area.
We soon separated, 1 km offset mat and 1 kilometer on the other hand, John. I decided to stay in the middle, it looked flatter and safer in case of emergency. We have agreed on a call on the UHF's at 12 hours and then every hour on the hour from then, when a shot was in turn the UHF and wait for the shooter to call in. Even in such Elyas young age was fascinated by everything, from which deer dung, he wanted to smell, small purple flowers with a great tradition of the house of his mother for a number of Local flora started (stick and leaf) or geology (river rocks). The backpack seemed to have gained a little weight (kids grow so fast), because the pig that deer hunting whether the country was much more steep, probably a combination of both!
After one hours fresh sign was found, and tracks nice and slimy green pellets. I followed the trail to the was 12pm, time to first call in. Turning on the UHF I waited a few seconds and make both matte and John checked and gave some positions on the map, then a flash of brown and orange I noticed ... .... deer. I stopped talking and watched a large deer on a fast trot to get away and stop 80m. I've tried to make a bead on the deer with the 300wsm but when he did stop to look back he covered his private parts with a large snow gums. He had enormous antlers in my mind, one was covered by another tree, but when he saw them go on both long and curved. Picking up the UHF-I told the other what had just happened.
The deer had probably wander to find a safe place to bed, and was disturbed by john, decide that he continue on the hill he had through my job and come from behind then startled by my smell, and soon moved to my left behind me, as I was slower. I do not know how much slower I could go, but I was disappointed that the animal had escaped in particular, coming from behind, I consider myself lucky if one Sambar seen within 1 ½ hours of hunting.
That was the only excitement Elyas 3pm and I had to call in. Resting at El in the package with a big rock I loose the bands give me the possibility of the valley to the front glass. We have checked all the UHF and then I saw an orange flash ... ... .. would be. Yes a Sambar, without the wind in my favor strengthened I have all the tires, double check that nothing could come loose and put a round in the camber. All I had to do was cover myself a 50m shot clear of a large eucalyptus tree, or I would risk the ban from the tea ball and scattered tree ferns take.
With no word of a lie It took me 50 minutes to cover the 50m, the Sambar now identified regularly monitored as a doe nearby. I did everything well, from which the El deer he seemed too excited. I placed one foot in a time lag between twigs and leaves, my shuffle feet if not to creaking noises. My shoulders hurt from the package I wanted to hurry and get to know the tree, but knowing Sambar a sudden movement and she would have bolted without hesitation. Words just can not describe time, but eventually I made it to the gum tree. I rest my arm on the tree I placed my gun in a shooting position, El alert to his ears to block the steady and I prepared for the shot to continue.
I placed the crosshairs on the deer standing 80m away I looked into taking of a chest shot, and realized that I had the opportunity to take a high shoulder and neatly dispatch a deer with a minimum of fuss. When I looked back legs following imaged the spine and shot high on the shoulder. The roar of the 300wsm echoed through the valleys, and good for the echoes had ceased the rear legs had dropped, had the failsafe shaved the top of both shoulders, above the shattered spine. I was delighted, run on my UHF I called the boys, they had heard the shot. I told them what had happened, and she jokingly replied: "You'll be right you can wear on your own. I gave them my GPS coordinates co "and celebrated with Elyas. I put the camera on a log near the road and snapped a few pictures, it was at this moment I noticed he was definitely quiet. I took him out of the box and put it beside the deer, inch weeks so he could do anything he knocked me to the deer's ears and eyes. I took some pictures to capture the moment that we had just achieved a great achievement, we had Sambar taken together, we had managed to hunt a wild chase in the real Sambar it together at the tender age of only 2 1 / 2 when I started the hard work of butchering.
When El began to cry, not sure why I checked on him. Dirty diaper in his hands seemed, it was not until I checked his feet I see they were frozen! I made an emergency fire and took his leather boots, warming his feet by the fire. I had run and had not noticed the drop in temperature when I was in motion and directed the deer. I notified both the boys and was butchering and keeping my son near the fire. By the time the boys had arrived, I had the deer in pieces, but still crying child. Fast packing El back in the pack we all have a lot of heart and head to the camp was about one kilometers away. John was soon out of sight, Matt, however, steadily and helped me through the creek crossings and rough marsh grasses.
With El still crying I started to panic, we got the pace as fast as my aching body could go, I let my front half of the deer in a fork of a tree and started walking back to camp. When I arrived at camp, John had the fire going and I soon El warmed by it, also giving him some medication for a bump on the head he received while I walked back to camp. It was not long before El warmed up and actually voluntarily go to bed! While relaxing after he had gone to sleep I revealed in my performance, I thought I could one little chance to do a grand slam of all six species of deer have El, but it was probably a dream?
