Nikon D40 is a truly great performer in the photography market. The reason to the top of the market in the budget DSLR market is due to the value that buyers felt they had to purchase. It was really a great camera for beginners DSLR buyers. You can still always a D40, but they are no longer manufactured, so the supply will be exhausted before long.
The Nikon D3000 is now released, and the is already known presence in the camera market. There are significant improvements of the D40, especially from a 6.1 megapixel sensor in the D40 to 10.2 megapixels in the D3000. There are also technology upgrades in the LCD, the image processing engine, and autofocus modes. The cameras are generally more "smarter" with each release. So it is always easier to perfect photos to participate in choosing the appropriate scene mode. At the time of this article, the user rating on Amazon.com is perfect. Not a reviewer has recorded negative about their new D3000.
Canon D3000 direct competition to the Canon Rebel XSi (aka 450D). They have very similar specifications and features, but the Rebel XSi is on the market for one years and half already.

The author was a very difficult position as the D40 and the Canon 300D Rebel came. Ready to buy first DSLR. Read all board posts. Got confused by the Canon-Nikon mud throwing and name calling (I read Forum posts are for entertainment only).
Sincerely came down on the Canon side then. Now, with the same decision, considering the Nikon and Canon D3000 450D Rebel XSi, the decision would be in favor of Nikon ... for only one reason. It is not because I was happy with my Canon gear .. not. The decision would be based solely on the age of the camera, the Nikon is newer and actually costs a few dollars less. But either would be excellent choices. And either will find great pictures. And both will be replaced by newer models in the very near future.
Go ahead and read the forum posts. But be prepared to be spammed by some very adamant Fans of both Canon and Nikon. It is really just a football game in the New York Giants Stadium when they play the Jets. It will be difficult for an objective opinion, because they are cross-town rivals to get.
