Top 20 questions to consider when buying a digital camera

My top 20 key questions to ask yourself when purchasing a digital camera.

1. How many "megapixels" / resolution?

Once and for all, at least for me, you need the highest resolution your money can buy when you buy. Period.

2. Who made the lens?

Most cameras give you an idea where the lens is made just by looking at the front of the lens. Whether the lens of your camera came from a reputable company like Leica, Zeiss, Canon, etc. .. Lens quality is one of the most important factors you should consider especially if you will use for commercial, technical or scientific purposes.

3. Do I need interchangeable lenses? How many are available for my particular camera in mind?

Having the option of interchangeable lenses gives you the freedom to experiment with different focal lengths. Although some P & S (point and shoot) cameras can rival DSLRs with a large zoom range for a non-interchangeable lens system.

Also note the number of lenses available for use with your particular camera because flexibility reasons. Just about the whole "zoom range" with interchangeable lenses versus modest zoom range for non interchangeable lens systems or P & S cameras.

4. Does it have a zoom option? What is the range?

Almost all the applications I mentioned above, a kind of zoom in (telephoto) or need (wide angle), especially if you are not the space to move around the object you shoot.

For landscape shots, wide shots are very common and attractive, while zooming in on details, like a break and complements the wide angle.

For weddings and events, you need a zoom, because there will be times where you're limited by space shoot and you have a difficult time moving. It is good to know that you can do all framing without even the transfer of your position.

A nice zoom gives the efficiency and versatility in your photography, so my suggestion is to go for the longest range you can get (usually from a 7X to 10X for Point and Shoot).

Note also the speed in or out, as this will be a factor if you shoot events like weddings. You will not capture that "decisive moment" at a moderate zoom speed.

5. Has the supply of crude to capture images?

Many photographers will tell you that this digital camera feature if you need to have large print your photos. While this is correct, the main reason why you want this because it gives you the advantage ... pure total control of your photos ... exposure, color, metadata, HDR and much more.

6. Can I use an external flash?

After an external flash option gives you the power and creative freedom to your subjects light any way you want.

You can use your digital camera to all kinds of lighting devices allowing you more options and versatility. This comes in the form of a hot shoe or a PC-Sync connection.

If your digital camera that function, there is hope, because flash accessories called slaves sold by third party companies in several taste, that will do the same job more or less.

7. Has a tripod mount?

Some of the most beautiful scenery pictures I've seen are undoubtedly made with a tripod, so this is a must if you plan to do this kind of photography.

The "available light shots" in a marriage, still lifes and product photos, studios and fine art pictures ... all need a tripod for a successful implementation ... So guess what happens if you do not have a tripod connection have? ... You can not effectively use a tripod!

8. Has automatic and manual focus?

It will not be clear at first why you should especially if you're just starting in photography. But if you're like me ... A total control freak when it comes to cameras ... and you really want your creative side to express this is definitely a must.

9. Can you attach to the filters? and what size filter?

Creative expression by means of special effects is just one of the many reasons that photography is fun and interesting, and experiment with filters is a creative pursuit must try your photography especially if you're a beginner.

Always remember to ask whether the specific digital camera that can handle filters for viewing and ask for the filter size. (To save you from buying the right filter with the wrong filter size) Note that most digital SLR's should be able to apply filters to treat as most lenses have a filter with the wire embedded in the lens.

Most P & S (point and shoot) digital cameras generally do not have a wire filters and accessories may require special order this, so You need to check to be sure.

Again, there are many third party accessories that you could buy filters to fit your P & S digital cameras that do not on these provisions. I will discuss anything about this in a future post so watch for. (Or subscribe to my announcement list (feed via e-mail), so you know when to.

10. Can I upgrade the firmware?

The good thing about a number of manufacturers of digital cameras is that they continue to improve their digital cameras, even after they sold it to you ... This comes in the form of a firmware upgrade.

Usually, an improvement in one or more characteristics of a camera. Make sure that the digital camera you plan to buy is a simple way to upgrade the firmware. This comes in the form of either an easily downloadable via the website of the manufacturer (find and bookmark it now) or a free CD-ROM.

Another warning - sure to consider a downgrade is possible or available in your digital camera ... Why is there a need to downgrade your Questions? ... Because, you may want to reinstall an earlier firmware ... If you do not like the results of a firmware upgrade.

Occasionally there is a function that will be removed by the upgrade you have not read and you've decided you just want to keep that function instead of a bunch of trivial upgrades of the new firmware. (Yes, I personally experienced.)

11. Are there extra goodies or software with it?

Some people ignore the fact that you will save by just doing a simple arithmetic. Did you notice that you use, your digital camera to get a lot less if you study the deals and offers on the market?

If you have a digital camera and the comes with software that you can really use ... such as Photoshop, elements, or any other image editing software for that matter, then you have some money saved you could otherwise spend. Some dealers will throw in many extras ... If you just ask.

Always try to ask for these things that you eventually buy if you do not - like camera bags, extra lenses, extra batteries, memory cards, tripod, lens cleaners, etc. Trust me ... You will eventually buying these things if you do not ask for it on the deal. What have you got to lose? Simply ASK. Would you believe I actually lowered my camera purchase costs with 30%? Ask away.

12. Has Local Support in your area?

Finding the answer to this will be a large advantage in the long term. Would not you sleep better at night, because you have extra security - the feeling that if there is something wrong with your digital camera, you can bring in for repair at a moments notice?

Not knowing where your camera will be repaired (or even if it arrived on a distant repair facility) is one of the worst feelings a photographer can have especially if you're in the middle of a shoot or project.

13. What kind of warranty does it? Worldwide Countrywide?

If you travel a lot its good to know that a country or even better - a global guarantee you get your camera wherever you are. Always bring the warranty card and glue it to your camera bag.

14. Does it have the ability to take video and audio?

I know, most DSLRs do not have this feature. But some non-interchangeable lens DSLRs have. This is a very useful feature to have if you shoot and want a project or document or a procedure, a moment or an idea that you might otherwise record to remember or even have trouble writing. It is always a good idea for a P & S camera back up that function.

The things you could do with audio and video clips on a photo shoot are only limited by your imagination ... interviews, documentation, funny Quips, training procedures, bloopers, etc..

15. Has a manual white balance?

White balance is one of the most interesting aspects of digital cameras. The fun and exciting to work with. After this option sets the photography fun-o-meter way up. In future posts I will discuss in detail, white balance so be sure to stay tuned.

16. How sensitive is it to infrared?

If you plan are to infrared pictures of the exciting world of fine art infrared photography you will enter information about your digital camera can do.

TIP: There is a simple way to test sensitivity of your digital camera to using an infrared device very often - a TV remote. For P & S, you can aim the remote the lens and measure how bright the LED of the remote. This should give you an idea how sensitive your digital camera for infrared. For DSLR's you take pictures of the LED and a little experimentation or research, or you can just google the particular camera model you have in mind for other people's experiences and thoughts.

17. What ISO is the sensitivity? Is manually adjustable?

ISO sensitivity is a term that refers to the sensitivity of the film to light. In digital camera world, refers it to the sensitivity of the electronic sensor in your digital camera linked to the ISO standard used for the movie.

The higher the ISO sensitivity of your camera faster or better it may take a certain amount of light.

High ISO sensitivity is useful for taking better pictures in the dark ... as in a church or 's night. The higher the ISO setting, the more details you can catch a dark scene.

One caveat - take a certain amount of noise from the camera shows at higher ISOs. Some people want it and some do not. Again, do not be afraid to ask or do research on the noise characteristics of your camera model in mind to see whether this the right choice for you.

18. How high or low shutter speed you can? What are the minimum and maximum aperture settings?

Shutter speed and aperture settings the fundamental mechanisms that drive your camera and controls the amount of light that is exposed by the film or image sensor.

You use a high shutter speeds in action and shots to prevent camera shake and you use a low shutter speeds and light effects on traffic or long exposure. You can use these figures on the websites I gave you in part 1. You see it in the technical specifications for a particular camera.

A lamp or "T"-feature is a nice feature to have, because you can take risks virtually very long periods. Another feature to have if your camera has a remote for this light and "T use has" mode. This allows you to take pictures without taking possession of your camera and add to the "camera shake".

With the subject of openings, a small (small aperture) can a wider depth of field, so your pictures are sharp from near to far versus a large aperture (large aperture) where your pictures have a narrow depth appear and "selectively targeted.

19. Does a particular form of an image stabilizer?

New cameras coming out as we speak often, this function. Simply put, an image stabilizer is a form of a mechanism built into the lens or the camera (depending on the manufacturer and their implementation) which in principle prevents you from getting blurry pictures when taking pictures in low light or a long or telephoto lens. This function can mean the difference between a blurry picture (aka no photo!) to a usable.

20. How close can concentrate? Macro capabilities?

The closer your camera can focus ... the larger the image of an object you can take on the dimensions of the image of the last picture ... and the bigger the image of the object ... more detail you can get. If you want to take pictures of small objects such as flowers and fine details this is a must-have.

That's it. Phew.

Do you really should go to all these questions? ... Of course not, but even if you only study and think about half of them ... and take your time ... I promise you one thing that will happen ...

You are ...

much smarter!

than when you first started with these questions ... ergo you in a better position to what digital camera to buy ... Because you're armed with the most powerful tool anyone can have

the power of information!

In any case, I hope you have as much value in these questions as many of my friends have and be able to get the camera of your dreams.

Enjoy!
