Hello From The Canadian Rockies - Part 18 - Our Celebrity Breakfast in the Twin Gables B

Bed and breakfast travel is one of our favorite ways of discovering new places and the historic Twin Gables B & B is a real treat. It is a 4.5 star rated bed and breakfast, situated in the posh district of Mount Royal in Calgary, which is about 25 minutes walk of center, and restaurant on 4th Street takes only 10 minutes walk. It was the perfect location for our Sneak Peek in Calgary and after a good night's rest after our feast at Il Giardino's Last night we enjoyed the comforts of our Mount Royal Suite, complete with a private sitting area, private bathroom, an in-suite jacuzzi, a fireplace and a laptop computer with high-speed internet access.

Well, a good part of the B & B experience is the experience and breakfasts boy, were we in for a treat. We were just ready to sit down for our morning meal in the historic room, when two other B & B guests came down the stairs: a good-looking pair of our time was to join us for breakfast.

I thought the face of the young man looked familiar, but I could not place. My husband, on the other hand, recognized him immediately: Michael Damian, aka "Danny Romalotti" of the famous "The Young and The Restless" daytime TV show.

I did some research on our famous breakfast companions and was amazed at their performance. Not only Michael star in the # 1-rated daytime drama (with an audience of more than 100 million worldwide), he is also a success in music and theater. He won the lead role in Andrew Lloyd Webbers "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat", which was the highest grossing revival in LA history. He continued his success in New York, breaking box office records on Broadway. Michael has also released 5 albums and has 8 top 40 hits and earned a BMI Songwriting Award. Michael has recently moved into directing, writing and producing films and music videos.

Mike's wife Janeen (formerly Janeen Best) is a celebrity in her own right: she is a former Solid Gold dancer and her film credits include Basic Instinct, Bugsy, Earth Girls Are Easy, Footloose and many more. Her television credits include Solid Gold, the Academy Awards, American Music Awards, Grammy Awards, the Young and the Restless, Matlock, Fantasy Island, Love Boat, Johnny Carson, the Dukes of Hazard and much more. So, finally dawned on me that we were actually surrounded by stars.

Well, after I read about this first surprise was the excellent breakfast, we started with a yogurt with fresh fruit, followed by a wonderful homemade blueberry scones. The main course was a wonderful western omelet with green peppers, onions and mushrooms. The meal was delicious and we had a great conversation with our famous breakfast companions.

Mike and Janeen shared with us in town to explore a location for their upcoming film project and they were staying at the Twin Gables for a few days. She stated that she started a film production Film company called Riviera a few years ago, and they enjoy a wonderful partnership writing, producing and directing films. Their latest project "Hot Tamale" was recently completed and will soon be premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

For a moment I felt a little strange, sharing the breakfast table with real celebrities, but Mike and Janeen were so natural and down-to-earth, it was like sitting in a regular couple from next door. There was not even a hint of snobbery or arrogance here, and all four of us had a wonderful conversation.

For me it was very interesting, because I have been a transition to the creative / media field with my website, so it was very informative for me to listen to Mike and Janeen share their own stories of moving from acting on the ground for a better camera behind the camera directing and producing film projects, an area where they had all the evidence again. We have also shared many laughs and parted, wishing each other good luck for our respective projects. Our meeting is to show that some of the stereotypes that we associate with celebrities often not applicable and that the fame do not automatically inflated egos of people. It was a real delight meeting Michael and Janeen, two successful, creative and down-to-earth people.

After breakfast I wanted to sit around with Deirdre and Henry Brost, the owners of Twin Gables, to learn more about the background of this historic house and how it came to this special bed and breakfast. Deirdre explained that in 1909 there was a large tree in Calgary and CP Rail property of all land in the neighborhood and decided to sell in lots. U.S. investors wanted to call the U.S. Hills, founder CPR but could not allow. He decided the area Mount Royal, in line with the name of the most exclusive district in Calgary.

The house itself was built between 1910 and 1912 by a lawyer, a Mr. Milliken, who had come to Calgary from Toronto. The economic crisis after the 1929 stock market crash, he lost the house to the bank in 1931 and a certain Wellington Walker, an entrepreneur from Toronto, bought it in 1932 for $ 10,500. He was involved in the coal and cattle business and owned several sign shops. In 1965, at 91 years, he wanted the house of his guardian, who turned it into an inn after his death. After she died in 1972 remained an expensive house and slowly began to fall into decay.

The house has previous owners, Marge and Tsak Rogers, are very popular local artists who produce paintings and began the renovation of the house from top to bottom in 1976. In the 25 years they completely gutted and renovated all three floors. Henry & Deirdre bought the house about 4 years ago, after they already owned a bed and breakfast in the suburbs of Calgary. Deirdre wanted to move downtown the city where the demand for tourist accommodation throughout the year. It was a big step for them both, and the taxes in the city had a good substantial increase in costs, but Deirdre loves the location. She said that the house she has always dreamed of owning.

Henry & Deirdre story of how they opened their B & B rather surprising in themselves: They took possession on a Saturday and their friends helped them move. On Sunday they unpacked their 3-bedroom house, on Monday the B & B inspector arrived Monday afternoon and she were open for business. Indeed Monday that they had their first guests.

She filled me in on a whole list of renovation adventures: they added two bathrooms of the three rooms. A big surprise they get when they find they had the whole house ReWire, but Henry, himself an expert electrician, rewired the house by leaving the walls and the historical background of the wires are intact and installing floors above. They installed extra sockets, extra telephone wires and high-speed internet access to all throughout house.

Another adventure befell them when their sewer pipe collapsed: she had several guests in the house when the clay pipe leading from the house and broke a rather unpleasant fluid back-up started in the house. They had to work a shift in the back with a hoe and many thousands of dollars later, they had not only a new sewer pipe, but also a new driveway and parking.

They also had the chimney again, and while they were on they had to remove a family of squirrels. The chimney had deteriorated mortar and they were the joints between the stones to do again. From 2004 to 2005 the house was completely repainted and the holes were found eavestroughs: it took 72 packets of silicon in to fill cracks. She handwashed and painted the house. And all this was planned, while the B & B was hosting a wide range of guests. Both Deirdre and Henry say that possession of an old house is like a moneypit, but they both love the house. Henry, always with a smile on his face, has nearly all renovations and says that he enjoyed them all. They have even redid the entire garden, not surprising given the fact that Deirdre is an avid gardener.

Deirdre runs the bed and breakfast full-time, while Henry helps her as much as he , given a full-time work as an electrician. Deirdre said she had to train him not to strips of bacon away from her B & B guests are advancing towards his work. With a boyish smile Henry on his face says he rules of the house in the meantime learned and takes no more tasty bits of breakfast to the guests.

With all the renovations, and Deirdre Henry tried to preserve the outstanding architectural features of the house. The dining room has not changed the wallpaper, furniture and hand-molded cornices original the house. The room also has a built-in mahogany china system. To this day, Twin Gables is a functional 'servant call system "with bells on the household help on every floor call.

The parlor features a walled wallpaper with scenes of Hyde Park in London. Deirdre believes that the background goes back to the first of second owner. The first owner, Mr. Milliken was friends with the Prince of Wales, who is said to have been here at the Twin Gables.

The living room and lounge with original lighting with a copy of the original Edison light bulbs. Certainly not the brightest lights, but really historical. The previous owner had the house designated as a provincial registered historic resource in 1984 for its historic art and craft style of the house.

Twin Gables is mostly overseas guests from England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany and the Netherlands. Of course a lot of Ontarians, British Columbians and travelers from the United States. Off-season they get a lot of "urban romantics "Calgary that local residents, just trying to get away for a weekend of pampering and romance. They also see their share of business travelers, especially during the week. Many of passengers are teachers, doctors and lawyers, but they have even hosted NASA rocket scientists.

Overall they have a very positive experience with them and their bed and breakfast hardly ever "guests from hell". The only thing that bugs them when guests do not come down in time for breakfast or if they do not show up at all. Fresh breakfasts do not taste that great half hour later and Deirdre is working hard to ensure its food tastes just right. She noted that she really has found her niche in life and strives for the best possible service to deliver. "I am here to serve," she says, and Henry agreed, nodding with his characteristic smile.

All rooms are equipped with a private bathroom, telephone, and individual laptops with fast access. Each room has its own fridge and a coffeemaker, and our suite had a wonderful Jacuzzi with a magnificent view The skyline of Calgary.

Deirdre and Henry's dedication to delivering a great B & B experience definitely shows.
