IR-filter advice?
I went to 2 stores today called specilist photography and asked for an IR filter for my DSLR camera and a Sony Alpha camera first she said you cannot your stores a IR filter. The second had a shop, but she said: "We do not think it will work on digital SLR cameras. If I put an IR filter would work on my Sony Alpha? I think that a 55-size filter My Sony takes. I really want to take pictures like those found on http://www.pauck.de/marco/photo/infrared/infrared.html Please help.
Before an IR filter for your camera purchase, you should IR-compatibility of your camera is manufacturer specific. Some cameras are more or less sensitive for the IR spectrum than others and this is mainly due to a filter mounted directly to your camera's image sensor. There is a measure of IR to visible light ratio will specturm determine if your camera is sensitive enough to IR image with a capture filter, such as the Hoya R72. I think most cameras store sales rather ignorant to specific sensitivity to IR-camera, so they would not know in the first place. They no doubt wanted to save face, despite their lack of knowledge by suggesting such a filter would not work on your camera. There are many places on the Internet where you can obtain information on the manufacturer-specific IR sensitivity. You can start with the IR Digtiale flickr group, I can not recall the specific message board thread on the sensitivity, but you can take time and read the various discussions on the issue. It is there, and as with everything to achieve a goal in the art of photography, your learning curve is just depends on what you're willing to commit to it. Good luck. Be aware, The photos in the link you provided were shot with infrared film and filter comb nation. The images produced by a digital camera will not look the same. You need a reasonable good understanding of photoshop editing skills to channel much of what you see to attain IR images are produced by a digital camera.
